Jim was born in Baltimore, Maryland and was raised in Alamogordo, New Mexico.  Jim graduated  with  honors from New Mexico State University, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Individualized Studies. 

Jim started in the investment business in 1983 with Quinn and Company.  At that time, Quinn and Company was the only New Mexico – based member of the New York Stock Exchange.  As a result of a merger Jim joined A.G. Edwards and Sons.  In 1992 Jim left A.G. Edwards and Sons to form Lord, Spence and Associates.  In 2000 the firm of Lord, Spence and Associates was renamed Spence Asset Management with Jim being the managing partner of the firm.
